Time for Some Better Entertainment During Long Rides
So my “sweet” children have been starting to fight more and more while on longer trips. Every parent understands what I am talking about! I needed a better way to keep them entertained. Also keeps them entertained while I am trying to get the camper backed into sites, leveled, and etc. No more “Daddy I want to get out!” So I started researching in car TV systems. The hope is to avoid War World 3 as much as possible that happens at the worst times such as in traffic towing my 39′ 5th wheel.
Solution!
Xtrons Flip Down Monitors
After a lot of research, I looked into replacement headrests, strap-on TVs, and flip down TVs. I found that a flip down monitor was going to be my best solution for multiple reasons.
Reasons for my Decision:
- More cost effective coming in at $260 for the Xtrons 11.6″ model instead of 400-600 for 2 headrests or 2 strap-on monitors.
- Didn’t have to modify my existing headrest or sacrifice my side airbags like if I replaced the headrests.
- Came packed with features including Android TV, Bluetooth, Wifi, and much more!
- Folds up out of the way.
- Larger screen than headrest options can offer. I actually have the smallest model.
Why Xtrons
Many years ago, I owned Xtrons replacement headrests in a 4Runner. I had them for years and never had any issues. They are EXTREMELY cost effective. The brand has been around for long time and unlike many Chinese manufacturer, stand behind their products and support them. I found this “Smart” model which is newer on Amazon and I was sold. Also if I do have issues in the future, it is extremely easy to replace now the wires are all run. Just a matter of unmounting and re-mounting the replacement.
Packed with Features:
- Android TV operating system
- Allows for included apps such as Netflix but downloading any app we may want.
- Wifi activity
- Bluetooth (For headphones plus connecting to my truck’s stereo)
- HMDI connection (For adding DVD, Xbox, and/or etc.)
- USB Connection (For other devices or external memory for music/videos)
- Remote control
- So much more!
Installation in my Truck
It came with very good instructions and they are not hard to install. BUT I went the lazy way… I had it installed by a friend of mine who owns a car customization company called VIP Customs. I HIGHLY recommend him and he is located in Central Virginia. He did a great job as I wanted not only to install the TV but my truck “pre-wired” to add our Nintendo Switch for trips.
Basic Installation:
The monitor basically is attached to the roof and needs power run to it. This is generally simple task of lowering the headliner, drilling holes for bolts, and bolting up the unit to the headliner. Most people pull the power from their overhead lighting. As I said above I went one more step….
Step Further!
So the step further was suggested by VIP Customs. The unit had HDMI and USB connection on the side but who wants wires hanging down from the roof??? They ran HDMI and USB down from the headliner to the storage compartment under my F-350’s jumpseat. Now I can place a DVD player, Nintendo Switch, or whatever we want to bring under the seat. Safe from someone seeing it or being damaged by restless children. GREAT OPTION!!
In Conclusion
The kids LOVE IT. I bought them wireless Bluetooth headphones also from Amazon, so I can enjoy my music while they enjoy what they are watching or playing. “All in” I have about $300 in parts and WAY LESS stress from arguing children on trips. I highly suggest this for anyone going on trips!
